What Los Altos homeowners say
-
Our built-in refrigerator column stopped holding temperature the week we were hosting. They came out, diagnosed a failing evaporator fan, and had the right Sub-Zero part on the second visit. The $89 service call was applied to the repair and everything is back to a steady 38°F.
-
They pulled our panel-ready unit out without leaving a mark on the white-oak cabinetry — runners down, blankets, the works. Quiet, precise, and they explained the 365-day labor warranty up front. Exactly the kind of careful work an estate kitchen needs.
-
Frost was building on the back wall of the fresh-food side and the fridge ran constantly. Turned out to be a defrost heater and sensor. Clear quote, genuine OEM parts, and the service call fee came off the final bill.
Common questions
Sub-Zero repair questions, answered
How much does Sub-Zero built-in repair cost in Los Altos?
It starts with a flat $89 diagnostic service call, which is waived when you approve the repair. From there the cost depends on the fault: a gasket, sensor or fan sits at the lower end, while a control board or sealed-system repair costs more for parts and proof. You always get a firm written quote first. See our built-in repair cost guide for current ranges.
What exactly does the $89 service call cover, and when is it waived?
The $89 covers a technician coming to your Los Altos kitchen, diagnosing the unit properly, and giving you a firm written quote — not a guess. It is waived in full the moment you approve the repair, so if you go ahead, the diagnosis effectively costs nothing. If you decide not to proceed, the $89 is all you owe, with no pressure to continue.
Do you charge extra for evenings, weekends, or larger built-in units?
The diagnostic service call is a flat $89 regardless of the day, and it is still waived when you approve the repair. The repair price itself depends on the model, the parts, and cabinet access rather than the clock. Bigger or harder-to-reach built-ins can take longer, but we quote that up front in writing so there are no surprises after the work begins.
Are you an authorized or certified Sub-Zero repair company?
No — we are an independent Sub-Zero specialist, not an authorized or factory-certified company, and we are clear about that. What we do offer is extensive hands-on experience with Peninsula built-ins, genuine OEM Sub-Zero parts, and work that follows Sub-Zero service specifications and manufacturer-recommended procedures. For routine built-in repair, many Los Altos homeowners prefer an experienced independent who answers the phone directly.
Do you use genuine Sub-Zero parts?
Yes. We install factory-certified, genuine OEM Sub-Zero parts and follow manufacturer-recommended procedures. Generic or salvaged components are a false economy in a built-in — they fail sooner and can damage the rest of the system. Because the labor carries a full 365-day warranty, we have every reason to fit the correct part properly the first time rather than cut a corner.
One column is warmer than the other — what is going on?
When one zone drifts warm while the other stays cold, the cause is usually airflow or that zone's evaporator — a failed evaporator fan, a defrost fault icing the coil, or a temperature sensor — rather than the compressor. We measure each zone before replacing anything. Our column temperature page explains the common patterns in more detail.
My Sub-Zero wine column is not holding temperature — can you fix it?
Yes. Wine columns have their own cooling, sensors and door seals, and they fail differently from food columns — drifting temperature, condensation, or a fan that has given up. We diagnose the specific circuit and repair it with genuine OEM parts so your bottles stay in the right range. See our wine column service page for what we check.
Why is frost or ice building up inside my built-in?
Frost build-up usually points to the defrost system — a defrost heater or sensor — or a door gasket letting humid air in. We test the defrost circuit, replace the failed heater or sensor, and check the seal so the problem does not return, rather than simply chipping away the ice. Confirming the true cause first means the fix actually holds instead of icing up again weeks later.
There is water pooling inside or under my refrigerator — what causes that?
Most interior water pooling is a frozen or clogged defrost drain. We clear the drain line, confirm it stays clear, and check the door gasket and leveling so condensation drains where it should instead of onto your hardwood or stone floor. If water is reaching the cabinet base near millwork, call us promptly so it does not damage the surrounding cabinetry.
Which areas around Los Altos do you serve?
We are based around Los Altos and cover ZIP codes 94022 and 94024, including Old Los Altos, Country Club, North Los Altos and Loyola Corners. We also serve nearby Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Our service areas page lists the neighborhoods and nearby cities we cover in full.
How soon can you come out for a Sub-Zero repair?
We book the soonest realistic appointment, often within a day or two, and confirm a specific time window rather than an unrealistic same-hour promise. If your fresh-food temperature is climbing fast or water is leaking onto a floor, tell us when you call and we will prioritise accordingly. Call (650) 668-1172 or book online for the earliest slot we have.
What should I have ready before the technician arrives?
It helps to know your model and serial number, found on the tag inside the cabinet, and to note what changed — a sound, a temperature, an alarm. Clearing a little space around the unit lets us reach the condenser and controls. None of this is required; if you are not sure of the model, we will find the tag on arrival and take it from there.
